Quickstart Guide: Using PowerPoint 2008 with eTEACH 4.0

If you prefer a multimedia version of this guide, a video can be found here.

The first step in creating a eTEACH presentation is usually the power point slide. It is often the main feature and reason for creating an eTEACH project, and is a key method for delievering information. There are, however, a number of formatting rules/procedures that must be followed to ensure that your power point is compatiable with the latest version of eTEACH. This guide is desinged to make sure that your PowerPoint is compatible with the latest version of eTEACH. This guide is for users of Mac OSX using PowerPoint 2008.

Lets start from the beginning:

  1. Create a power point.
  2. Create a Power Point

  3. When you are finished with your power point, record your narration.
  4. From the slide show menu in Power Point 2008, select “record narration”.
Choose your input method (the microphone that you wish to use) and hit record

    Choosing an Input Method
  5. After recording your slide show, you will be prompted to keep the slide timings used with your narration, if you wish to keep these timings, say yes (they can be changed later in eTEACH).
    Choosing an Input Method
  6. Next save the power point. This is a key step, you cannot save your power point as a Power Point 2008 (.pptx) file, it must be a Power Point 97-2004 (.ppt) file. This is because eTEACH cannot read files that have a .pptx extension.
    DO NOT SAVE AS .pptx
  7. In order to save as a .ppt select save as from the file menu and in the format drop down menu select “Power Point 97-2004 presentation (.ppt)”. Select the folder that you wish to save in, and hit save.
    Save as .pptSave as .ppt
  8. Open up eTEACH. Create a new presentation, and then either drag and drop your power point into the time line, or select file>import>power point and open your power point file.

  9. eTEACH will take a second to convert your file, and then you should be able to see representations of your slides in the time line, and your slides (if you saved the timings) should be timed according to your audio.

    Importing Progress Bar

  10. If you wish to add a table of contents to your eTEACH presentation, simply navigate up to Edit>Generate TOC from Slides/Slides With Timings and click. eTEACH will automatically generate a table of contents timed matching the timing of each slide. table of contents

You can edit and shift these contents around just like slides or media toc

  11. Click on the Edit buttonedit on the middle-left to edit individual slides/slide timings, or save your presentationEteach Save AS and then click the preview buttoneteach preview to open a browser window and preview your eTEACH presentation.

  12. Congratulations! You have successfully created a power point that is compatiable with the new version of eTEACH. You can now begin work on your eTEACH project! If need more help check out the other eTEACH quick start guides here, or click on the HELP! button to access additional resources.
